The origin of the name Seymour
Seymour (Saint-Maur) is an illustrious ancient Anglo-Norman grandee noble surname derived from Saint-Maur-des-Fossés in Normandy. Arriving in England during the 1066 Norman Conquest, the House of Seymour rose to supreme royal aristocracy as Dukes of Somerset, Earls of Hertford, and Barons Seymour. The dynasty played a pivotal role in English royal history, producing Queen Jane Seymour (third wife of King Henry VIII and mother of King Edward VI) and Lord Protectors of the Realm.
The symbolism of the Seymour coat of arms
Visually complex and royal, the Seymour coat of arms features a radiant golden shield charged with a red pile (wedge pointing downward) bearing three golden lions passant guardant in pale, set between six deep blue fleurs-de-lis (three on each side in chief and flanks). In classical heraldry, the gold field symbolises generosity, elevation of mind, and royal favor, while the red pile with golden lions denotes direct royal English alignment, supreme courage, and knightly sacrifice. The six deep blue fleurs-de-lis signify French ducal heritage, spiritual purity, and high nobility across generations. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a red phoenix rising from golden flames, serving as an iconic emblem of immortality, rebirth out of trial, and invincible endurance. Below, the motto scroll displays Foy pour devoir, translating to "Faith for duty." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Wiltshire and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.
