The origin of the name Serrano

Serrano (de Serrano) is an ancient Spanish grandee noble surname derived from Spanish serrano (meaning "mountaineer" or "one who resides near the high mountain ridge / sierra"). Originating during the early Reconquista in Old Castile, Andalusia, and Extremadura, the House of Serrano rose to supreme aristocracy as Dukes of la Torre and Counts of San Antonio. Members served as Prime Ministers of Spain, Regents of the Realm, Knights of Santiago, and viceroys across Europe and the Americas.

The symbolism of the Serrano coat of arms

Commanding and martial, the Serrano coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a central red lion rampant. In Iberian heraldry, the silver shield symbolises sincerity, peace, and unblemished judicial purity, while the central red lion rampant represents supreme bravery, warrior fortitude, noble authority, and heroic leadership on the field of battle. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of red and silver feathers, symbolising noble elevation, light, and victory. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in Castilian grandee rolls and catalogued in the Nobiliario Español and J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.
