The origin of the name Schneider

Schneider is an ancient German, Austrian, and Swiss occupational surname derived from German Schneider (meaning "tailor," "cutter," or "one who crafts fine garments," from schneiden, meaning "to cut"). Originating during the early Middle Ages across Bavaria, Saxony, Austria, and Switzerland, families bearing the Schneider name held patrician standing in merchant guilds, municipal councils, and civic courts. Expanding across Europe and the Americas, the House of Schneider produced celebrated scientists, statesmen, and cultural leaders.

The symbolism of the Schneider coat of arms

Visually pure and hospitality-inspired, the Schneider coat of arms features a vibrant green shield charged with a central golden chalice or goblet. In classical European heraldry, the green field symbolises hope, vitality, growth, and deep roots in ancestral soil. The central golden chalice represents sacred trust, manorial hospitality, communion, spiritual devotion, and generosity held in high honor across generations. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of green and gold feathers, symbolising noble elevation and light. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in German and Swiss patrician armorial rolls and catalogued in J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.
