Eminently suited for a proper brew! Whether it’s a gift to mark a milestone birthday, a new home, or Christmas morning — here’s an artwork with history in your hands.

The origin of the name Santos

Santos (dos Santos / de los Santos) is an ancient Spanish and Portuguese noble surname derived from Spanish and Portuguese santos (meaning "saints," originally given to a child born on All Saints' Day—Todos os Santos—or an ancestor associated with church manors and sanctuaries). Originating in Northern Spain and Portugal during the early Middle Ages, the House of Santos established prominent seats, producing Knights of Santiago, royal officers, sea captains, and colonial magistrates who expanded across the Iberian Peninsula, Brazil, and the Americas.

The symbolism of the Santos coat of arms

Visually pure and maritime, the Santos coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with three argent / silver or white wavy horizontal bands (barry wavy azure and argent of six). In classical Iberian heraldry, the deep blue field symbolises loyalty, truth, and unyielding faith, while the three silver wavy horizontal bands denote river lordship, ocean navigation, fluid adaptability, and navigating life's turbulent challenges with calm, unblemished strength. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of blue and silver feathers, symbolising noble elevation and light. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in Portuguese and Spanish armorial registers and catalogued in J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.

Doña Maria dos Santos (17th Century): Recorded gentlewoman and benefactor in Lisbon charters.
