The origin of the name Santiago

Santiago (de Santiago) is an ancient Spanish and Galician grandee noble surname named in honor of St. James the Greater (Santo Iago / Saint James, the Patron Saint of Spain). Originating during the 9th century following the discovery of the Apostle's tomb at Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, the surname became synonymous with the elite Military Order of Santiago. Members held high standing as Knights Commander, grand marshals, and royal magistrates, spreading across Galicia, Old Castile, Andalusia, and the Americas.

The symbolism of the Santiago coat of arms

Visually complex and sacred, the Santiago coat of arms features a shield partitioned quarterly: the 1st and 4th deep blue quarters are charged with two upright argent / silver or white steel swords with golden hilts; the 2nd and 3rd silver quarters bear five deep blue scallop shells (escallops) arranged in saltire (X-shape). In Iberian heraldry, the deep blue and silver fields symbolise loyalty, truth, sincerity, peace, and judicial purity. The upright silver swords signify armed readiness, knightly justice, and defense of Christendom, while the blue scallop shells represent holy pilgrimage to Compostela, the Order of Santiago, and naval command. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a plume of blue and silver feathers, symbolising noble elevation. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in Galician and Castilian nobility rolls and catalogued in the Nobiliario Español and J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.
