The origin of the name Sanders
Sanders (Saunders) is an ancient English patronymic surname meaning "son of Sander" (a medieval diminutive of Alexander, derived from Greek Alexandros, meaning "defender of men"). Establishing premier landed seats across Surrey (Sanderstead Court), Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire, and Ireland, the House of Sanders produced High Sheriffs, Parliamentarians, legal scholars, and military commanders. Codified early in feudal records, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls (Richard Sander).
The symbolism of the Sanders coat of arms
Visually pure and commanding, the Sanders coat of arms features a black shield charged with a broad engrailed argent / silver or white chevron powdered with black ermine spots, set between three silver bull's or calves' heads caboshed (facing forward: two in chief, one in base). In classical heraldry, the black field symbolises deep wisdom, dignity, and constancy under trial, while the engrailed ermine chevron represents fortress protection, architectural integrity, and high nobility. The three silver bull heads signify unyielding strength, warrior determination, territorial defense, and agricultural lordship. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a plume of black and silver feathers, symbolising noble elevation and light. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Surrey and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.
