The origin of the name Salinas

Salinas (de Salinas) is an ancient Spanish grandee noble surname derived from Spanish salinas (meaning "salt mines," "salt marshes," or "salt works," referring to an ancestor residing near royal salt estates or the feudal manor of Salinas de Léniz in Gipuzkoa, Basque Country). Originating during the early Middle Ages, the House of Salinas rose to high aristocracy as Counts of Salinas, Marquis of Elche, and Knights of Calatrava. Members served as ambassadors to the Tudor court, royal treasurers, and viceroys across Europe and the New World.

The symbolism of the Salinas coat of arms

Visually complex and chivalric, the Salinas coat of arms features an inner shield partitioned quarterly: the 1st and 4th black quarters display a golden cross flory/patonce; the 2nd and 3rd deep blue quarters bear a golden fleur-de-lis. The inner shield is set within a broad red border (bordure) charged with eight golden saltires (X-shaped crosses). In Iberian heraldry, the contrast of black, blue, and gold symbolises wisdom, loyalty, truth, generosity, and royal favor. The golden cross flory and fleur-de-lis represent chivalric devotion and spiritual purity, while the red bordure with eight golden saltires denotes martial sacrifice and victory at the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa (1212). Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a plume of red and blue feathers, symbolising noble elevation. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in Castilian and Basque nobility rolls and catalogued in the Nobiliario Español and J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.
