The origin of the name Salazar
Salazar (de Salazar) is an ancient Basque and Castilian grandee noble surname originating from the Salazar Valley (Valle de Salazar) in Navarre and the feudal manor of Salazar in Burgos, Old Castile (derived from Basque salla, meaning "meadow," and zahar, meaning "old"—thus "old meadow / ancestral estate"). Originating during the 10th century, the House of Salazar held premier standing as Lords of Salazar, Counts of Blanco, and Knights of the Order of Santiago. Playing a central role in the Reconquista, members served as grand chancellors, royal ambassadors, and viceroys across Spain, Italy, and the Americas.
The symbolism of the Salazar coat of arms
Visually pure and fortress-inspired, the Salazar coat of arms features a vibrant green shield charged with a central argent / silver or white triple-towered castle or tower standing upon a silver mount in base. In Iberian heraldry, the green field symbolises hope, vitality, and deep roots in ancient Basque and Castilian soil. The silver triple-towered castle represents fortress defense, architectural strength, manorial authority, and civic protection over the ancestral valley of Salazar. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a radiant golden fleur-de-lis issuing above the crown, symbolising spiritual purity, royal favor, and illuminated leadership across generations. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in Castilian grandee rolls and catalogued in the Nobiliario Español and J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.
