The Russell surname traces its origins to England shortly after the Norman Conquest of 1066. The family’s founding ancestor, Hugh de Rosel—hailing from the lordship of Rosel in Cotentin, Normandy—is officially listed in William the Conqueror’s Domesday Book of 1086 as holding hereditary feudal estates directly from the King in Dorset. The historic seat of this Anglo-Norman lineage was Kingston Russell in Dorsetshire. Records from around 1224 (8 Henry III) reveal that Sir Ralph Russell was granted official custody of his wife’s extensive baronial lands. In the earliest feudal records of Dorset and Gloucestershire, this original "Rossells" line is distinctly documented as bearing the red lion rampant (Argent, a lion rampant gules).

The Russells also represent a classic example of an "Old English" family in Ireland, with their arrival tied to the initial wave of Anglo-Norman conquests. In January 1177, during King Henry II’s reign, the Anglo-Norman knight Robert de Russell participated in a bold, unauthorized expedition led by the ambitious Sir John de Courcy to claim parts of Ulster. As one of only 22 elite knights alongside approximately 300 foot soldiers, Russell took part in a swift four-day march from Dublin that caught local Gaelic forces completely by surprise, culminating in the successful capture of Downpatrick in February 1177.
