The origin of the name Rumsey

Rumsey is a primary historical spelling variant of the noble Scottish clan surname Ramsay / Ramsey (Clan Ramsay of Dalhousie Castle), as well as a topographic surname derived from the town of Romsey in Hampshire (Old English Rumes-eg, meaning "Rum's island"). Holding ancestral lands across Midlothian, Hampshire, and the Americas, families bearing the Rumsey spelling served as High Sheriffs, pioneering engineers, and military officers.

The symbolism of the Rumsey coat of arms

Sharing the exact ancestral bearings of the noble Ramsay and Ramsey lineages, the Rumsey coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a central black eagle displayed with spread wings, golden beak, and claws. In classical heraldry, the silver field symbolises sincerity, peace, and unblemished judicial purity, while the central black eagle displayed represents high intellect, solar courage, imperial vision, and noble elevation. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a silver unicorn's head erased, serving as an iconic emblem of chivalric purity, untamed spirit, and invincible strength. Below, the motto scroll displays Ora et labora, translating to "Pray and work." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in heraldic registries and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.
