The origin of the name Rossi

Rossi is one of Italy's most celebrated and historical surnames, derived from the plural form of Rosso (from the Latin russus, meaning "red" or "red-haired"). Originating across northern and central Italy—most notably in Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna, Venice, and Piedmont—the noble branches of the House of Rossi held powerful feudal lordships, including the sovereign County of San Secondo near Parma, from the 12th century onward.

The symbolism of the Rossi coat of arms

The Rossi coat of arms features a gules (red) shield charged with a prominent argent (silver) rampant lion or golden stars. In classical heraldry, gules represents warrior valor, magnanimity, and royal sacrifice, while argent denotes peace, sincerity, and moral purity.

The silver lion rampant embodies majestic bravery, sovereign leadership, and unyielding defense of ancestral domains.

Surmounting the shield, the crest displays a lion's head or feather plumes framed by red and silver mantling. Officially recorded in Italian armorial registries, including Crollalanza’s Dizionario Storico-Blasonico.

Rossi von della Riva (16th c.): Prominent Venetian diplomat and statesman who served the Republic of Venice during the Ottoman wars.
