The origin of the name Ross

Ross (Clan Ross / Clann Aindréas) is one of the premier ancient royal Gaelic clan surnames in Scottish history, derived from Gaelic ros (meaning "promontory," "headland," or "peninsula," referring to the ancient Earldom of Ross in Northern Scotland). Tracing direct descent from Fearchar mac an t-Sagairt, 1st Earl of Ross in the 13th century, the clan commanded vast Highland territories from Balnagown Castle and Pitcalnie. Defending Scottish sovereignty alongside King Robert the Bruce at Bannockburn (1314), the Chiefs of Clan Ross played a central role in northern Gaelic civilization.

The symbolism of the Ross coat of arms

Commanding and noble, the Ross coat of arms features a red shield charged with three argent / silver or white lions rampant (two in chief, one in base). In Gaelic heraldry, the red field symbolises martial courage, fortitude, and sacrifice, while the three silver lions rampant represent supreme bravery, ancient earldom authority, heroic spirit, and unblemished judicial purity across ancestral Highland domains. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of red and silver feathers, symbolising noble elevation and victory. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland for the Chiefs of Clan Ross.
