The origin of the name Rose
Rose (Rose of Kilravock) is an ancient Gaelic and Anglo-Norman Scottish clan surname derived from Old French de Ros (referring to an ancestor originating from Ros in Normandy or Gaelic ros, meaning "a promontory" or "wooded hill"). Settling in Nairnshire in the Scottish Highlands during the 12th century, the clan established their royal ancestral seat at Kilravock Castle in 1293. Holding the hereditary Lordship of Kilravock for over seven centuries, the Chiefs of Clan Rose played prominent roles in Highland history, recorded in crown charters as allies to Scottish monarchs and custodians of Gaelic tradition.
The symbolism of the Rose coat of arms
Visually rich and historic, the Rose coat of arms features a radiant golden shield charged with a central red wild boar's head erased, set between three water-bougets or leather water flasks (two in chief, one in base). In classical Highland heraldry, the gold field symbolises generosity, elevation of mind, and royal favor, while the red boar's head represents untamed martial courage, fierce determination, and unyielding defense of Kilravock Castle. The three water-bougets signify military supply, endurance on long campaigns, and ancestral crusade service. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a golden Gaelic harp, serving as an iconic emblem of harmony, bards, and Celtic cultural heritage. Below, the motto scroll displays Constant and True. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland for Rose of Kilravock.
