The origin of the name Rojas
Rojas (de Rojas) is an ancient Spanish grandee noble surname derived from the town and manor of Rojas in Burgos, Old Castile (from Spanish roja, meaning "red earth" or "red crag"). Originating during the 11th century, the House of Rojas rose to supreme aristocracy as Marquis of Bosch and Counts of Mora. Members served as Grand Chancellors of Castile, Knights of Santiago, viceroys, and celebrated Golden Age dramatists across Spain and New Spain.
The symbolism of the Rojas coat of arms
Visually striking and celestial, the Rojas coat of arms features a radiant golden shield charged with five deep blue six-pointed stars (mullets) arranged in saltire (X-shape: 2-1-2). In Iberian heraldry, the gold field symbolises generosity, elevation of mind, and royal favor, while the five deep blue six-pointed stars denote loyalty, truth, unyielding faith, divine guidance, and celestial light radiating across generations. The saltirewise arrangement signifies knightly sashes of honor and cross-road resolution. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a plume of blue and gold feathers, symbolising noble elevation and light. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in Castilian grandee rolls and catalogued in the Nobiliario Español and J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.
