The origin of the name Robles

Robles (de Robles) is an ancient Spanish grandee noble surname derived from Spanish robles (meaning "oak trees," referring to an ancestor residing near ancient oak groves or the feudal manor of Robles in the Kingdom of León). Originating during the early Middle Ages in Old Castile and León, the House of Robles rose to high standing as Lords of Villafrechós and Knights of Santiago. Playing an influential role in Spanish history, members served as royal governors, military commanders, and bishops across Spain and the Americas.

The symbolism of the Robles coat of arms

Visually forest-inspired and protective, the Robles coat of arms features a radiant golden inner shield charged with a rooted green oak tree, against which a black lion rampant rears in battle stance. The inner shield is set within an argent / silver or white border (bordure) charged with eight black ermine spots. In Iberian heraldry, the gold field symbolises generosity, elevation of mind, and royal favor, while the green oak tree represents ancient land tenure, family endurance, and deep roots. The rearing black lion signifies supreme bravery, warrior fortitude, and defense of ancestral land. The silver bordure with eight black ermine spots denotes unblemished judicial purity, dignity, and high noble standing. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of green and gold feathers, symbolising noble elevation. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in Castilian and Leonese nobility rolls and catalogued in the Nobiliario Español and J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.
