The origin of the name Robinson
Robinson is a widely respected English patronymic surname meaning "son of Robin" (a cherished diminutive of Robert, derived from the Germanic Hrode-bert, meaning "bright fame"). Established across Yorkshire, Durham, and Cumberland shortly after the 14th century, early family branches acquired extensive manorial seats. Historical archives cite John Robynson in the 1324 Court Rolls of the Manor of Wakefield and Richard Robinson in 15th-century Yorkshire land charters.
The symbolism of the Robinson coat of arms
The Robinson coat of arms displays a vert (green) or gules (red) shield charged with a golden chevron positioned between three silver stags trippant or robins. In heraldry, vert symbolizes vitality, hope, and loyalty, while argent denotes peace and purity.
The heraldic chevron represents protection and faithful service, while the stags or robins symbolize harmony, swiftness, wisdom, and peaceful devotion to kin and realm.
Positioned above the shield is a tournament helmet with rich mantling, crowned by a crest depicting a stag or robin proper. Officially registered in Sir Bernard Burke’s General Armory.
