The origin of the name Roberts

Roberts is an illustrious ancient Welsh and English patronymic surname meaning "son of Robert" (derived from Germanic Hrode-bert, meaning "bright fame"). Tracing lineage from ancient Welsh princes of Denbighshire, Montgomeryshire, and Carnarvonshire, the House of Roberts established premier landed seats at Glan y Wern and Plas Einion. Ruling as High Sheriffs, Parliamentarians, and military commanders, members exerted immense political influence across Wales, England, and the British Empire. Codified early, the name appears in 16th-century Welsh heraldic visitations.

The symbolism of the Roberts (Version 1) coat of arms

Commanding and heraldically balanced, this Roberts coat of arms features a shield partitioned horizontally per fess arched in black (sable) and argent / silver or white, charged overall with a central lion rampant counterchanged (silver on the upper black half, black on the lower silver half). In classical Welsh heraldry, the black and silver fields symbolise deep wisdom, dignity, sincerity, peace, and unblemished judicial purity. The lion rampant counterchanged represents supreme bravery, warrior fortitude, noble authority, and perfect balance between light and strength. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a plume of black and silver feathers issuing from a golden crown, symbolising noble elevation, light, and royal favor. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in Lewys Dwnn’s Heraldic Visitations of Wales and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.
