Celebrate your family heritage with a gift that will be genuinely cherished – the Robert Family Crest framed and printed on museum-quality matte paper. It may well stay on the wall for generations to come! Beautifully illustrated. Carefully researched. Uniquely personal.

The Roberts coat of arms originates within Welsh heraldry and is historically assigned to lineages claiming descent from Einion Efell, a prominent twelfth-century lord of Cynllaith in Powys (living c. 1182). Under the traditional Welsh patronymic naming system, certain lines of his descendants later formalized their ancestry into the fixed hereditary surname Roberts (meaning son of Robert) during the sixteenth century, particularly along the borders of Denbighshire and Shropshire. The lineage and its corresponding armorial specifications are documented in early Welsh genealogical collections and summarized in standard British reference works.

The symbolism of the Roberts family crest

The official heraldic record blazons the shield as Per fess Sable and Argent, a lion rampant counterchanged. This describes a shield divided horizontally into two equal halves: the upper section is black (Sable) and the lower section is silver (Argent). A single lion rampant is positioned over the division, with its coloration inverted so that the top half of the lion is silver and the lower half is black. In traditional heraldic nomenclature, a lion rampant denotes strength and martial fortitude, while the counterchanged arrangement represents a balanced ancestral lineage. The crest positioned above the helmet consists of a plume of ostrich feathers.

Notable Historical Figures

The foundational figure associated with these arms is Einion Efell (c. 1180–1200), the son of Madog ap Maredudd, who was the last prince of unified Powys. Over successive centuries, his descendants carried these specific arms into various civic and military roles, including members of the local gentry who formalized the Roberts surname under the administrative shifts of the Tudor period in Wales.
