The origin of the name Robbins
Robbins (Robins / Robyns) is an ancient English patronymic surname meaning "son of Robin" (a medieval diminutive of Robert, meaning "bright fame"). Establishing influential landed estates across Gloucestershire, Somerset, Warwickshire, and Oxfordshire, the House of Robbins produced High Sheriffs, parliamentary leaders, and medical pioneers. Codified early in feudal records, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls (John Robyns).
The symbolism of the Robbins coat of arms
Visually structured and sacred, the Robbins coat of arms features a shield partitioned vertically per pale in black and argent / silver or white with curved flanches counterchanged, charged overall with three fleurs-de-lis across the center. In classical heraldry, the contrast of black and silver fields symbolises deep wisdom, dignity, constancy, sincerity, and unblemished judicial purity. The three fleurs-de-lis represent royal favor, spiritual purity, and high nobility across generations. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays two golden dolphins or sea-monsters affronté flanking a central silver and black fleur-de-lis, symbolising maritime guardianship, swift intellect, affection, and steadfast devotion. Below, the motto scroll displays Deus pro nobis, quis contra nos?, translating to "If God is for us, who can be against us?" The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Gloucestershire and catalogued in Burke's General Armory.
