The origin of the name Rivera
Rivera (de Rivera / Ribera) is an ancient Spanish and Galician grandee noble surname derived from Spanish rivera or Galician ribera (meaning "riverbank," "shore," or "coastal valley"). Tracing direct descent from Sancho de Rivera, knight to King Alfonso VIII of Castile during the 12th century, the House of Rivera rose to supreme aristocracy as Dukes of Alcalá and Counts of los Molares. Members served as Viceroys of Naples, Cardinals of Seville, and celebrated artists across Europe and the Americas.
The symbolism of the Rivera coat of arms
Visually pure and fluid, the Rivera coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with three red wavy horizontal bands (barry wavy gules and argent). In Iberian heraldry, the silver field symbolises sincerity, peace, and unblemished judicial purity, while the three red wavy horizontal bands denote martial sacrifice, river lordship, fluid adaptability, and navigating turbulent obstacles with courage. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of red and silver feathers, symbolising noble elevation and victory. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in Galician and Castilian grandee rolls and registered in the Nobiliario Español and J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.
