The origin of the name Richardson
Richardson is an ancient English and Scottish patronymic surname meaning "son of Richard" (derived from Germanic Rik-hard, meaning "powerful ruler"). Establishing major landed seats across Yorkshire, Durham, Dumfriesshire, and Fife, the House of Richardson rose to high standing as baronets, High Sheriffs, Lord Provosts, and physicians. Codified early in feudal records, the name appears in the 1381 Poll Tax of Yorkshire (William Richardson).
The symbolism of the Richardson coat of arms
Visually striking and noble, the Richardson coat of arms features a shield partitioned horizontally per fess: the upper argent / silver or white section (chief) is charged with three black lion's heads erased facing left; the lower main field is solid black (sable). In classical heraldry, the silver chief symbolises sincerity, peace, and unblemished judicial purity, while the black lower field denotes deep wisdom, dignity, and unyielding constancy under trial. The three black lion heads signify supreme bravery, fierce watchfulness, noble authority, and protective command. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of black and silver feathers, symbolising noble elevation and light. Below, the motto scroll displays Virtute acquiritur honos, translating to "Honor is acquired by virtue." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in Scottish and English heraldic rolls and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.
