The origin of the name Richards

Richards is an ancient English and Welsh patronymic surname meaning "son of Richard" (derived from Germanic Rik-hard, composed of rik, meaning "ruler" or "king," and hard, meaning "brave" or "strong"—thus "powerful ruler"). Widespread across Glamorgan, Cornwall, Shropshire, and Kent following the early Middle Ages, the House of Richards produced High Sheriffs, baronets, judges, and military commanders. Codified early in feudal records, the name appears in the 1327 Subsidy Rolls (William Richardes).

The symbolism of the Richards coat of arms

Commanding and noble, the Richards coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a broad deep blue chevron, above a central deep blue lion rampant in base. In classical heraldry, the silver field symbolises sincerity, peace, and unblemished judicial purity, while the broad deep blue chevron represents loyalty, truth, faith, and architectural defense. The deep blue lion rampant in base signifies supreme bravery, steadfast faith, noble authority, and warrior fortitude across generations. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a plume of blue and silver feathers, symbolising noble elevation and light. Below, the motto scroll displays Honore et amore, translating to "With honor and love." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Glamorgan and catalogued in Burke's Landed Gentry.
