The origin of the name Rice
Rice is an illustrious ancient Welsh patronymic surname derived from Ap Rhys (meaning "son of Rhys," from rhys, meaning "fiery zeal," "enthusiasm," or "reigning prince"). Sharing direct lineage with Price and tracing descent from Rhys ap Tewdwr, King of Deheubarth, the House of Rice established premier seats at Dynevor Castle in Carmarthenshire and across County Kerry in Ireland. Ruling as Barons Dynevor, High Sheriffs, and Parliamentarians, members of the family exerted immense political influence across Wales and Ireland. Codified early, the name appears in 16th-century Welsh heraldic rolls.
The symbolism of the Rice coat of arms
Visually pure and watchful, the Rice coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a broad golden chevron bordered in black and powdered with black ermine spots, set between three black ravens or crows (two in chief, one in base). In classical Welsh heraldry, the silver field symbolises sincerity, peace, and unblemished judicial purity, while the golden chevron with ermine spots represents architectural protection, high nobility, and knightly sashes of honor. The three black ravens signify acute watchfulness, sharp intellect, longevity, and ancient Welsh raven lore associated with the chieftains of Rheged. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a golden lion rampant holding a steel bar or weight erect, symbolising heroic courage holding balance and justice. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in Lewys Dwnn’s Heraldic Visitations of Wales and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.
