The origin of the name Reynolds
Reynolds is an ancient Anglo-Norman and English patronymic surname meaning "son of Reginald" (derived from Germanic Raginwald, composed of ragin, meaning "counsel/advisor," and wald, meaning "rule" or "power"—thus "powerful advisor"). Introduced to England during the 1066 Norman Conquest and expanding into Ireland (County Leitrim and Westmeath), the House of Reynolds established major landed seats across Devon, Somerset, and Leicestershire. Members served as High Sheriffs, Presidents of the Royal Academy, and military commanders. Codified early in feudal records, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls (John Reynald).
The symbolism of the Reynolds coat of arms
Visually vibrant and forest-inspired, the Reynolds coat of arms features a vibrant green shield charged with a central golden lion rampant, set between three golden scallop shells or escallops (two in chief, one in base). In classical heraldry, the green field symbolises hope, vitality, and deep roots in ancestral soil, while the central golden lion rampant represents supreme bravery, royal leadership, and heroic spirit. The three golden scallop shells serve as iconic emblems of long journeys, sea voyages, noble pilgrimage, and resolute defense of domain. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a silver or golden stag or hart resting (hart couchant), symbolising peace, forest command, acute vigilance, and quiet dignity under trial. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Devon and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.
