The origin of the name Reyes
Reyes (de los Reyes) is an ancient Spanish grandee noble surname derived from Spanish reyes (meaning "kings" or "royal court," originally given to an ancestor born on the Feast of the Epiphany/Three Kings, or one who served in the royal household). Originating during the early Reconquista in Old Castile, Andalusia, and Galicia, the House of Reyes established influential manorial seats, producing Knights of Santiago, royal officers, naval commanders, and colonial governors across Spain and New Spain.
The symbolism of the Reyes coat of arms
Visually regal and fortress-inspired, the Reyes coat of arms features a deep blue central shield charged with a silver triple-towered castle topped with a red and golden royal crown in chief. The inner shield is set within a broad golden border (bordure or) charged with eight red saltires (X-shaped crosses) alternating with silver crosslets or stars. In Iberian heraldry, the deep blue field symbolises loyalty, truth, and faith, while the silver castle represents fortress defense, manorial hospitality, and civic protection. The royal crown denotes direct allegiance to the sovereign and supreme nobility, while the golden bordure with red saltires signifies martial sacrifice and victory at the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa (1212). Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a plume of blue and gold feathers, symbolising noble elevation. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in Castilian nobility rolls and catalogued in the Nobiliario Español and J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.
