The origin of the name Reed
Reed (Read / Reede) is an ancient English and Scottish topographic and descriptive surname derived from Old English read (meaning "red-haired" or "ruddy-complexioned warrior") or ried ("a clearing in the forest"). Originating in Northumberland (Troughend), Durham, and the Scottish Borders, the House of Reed held ancestral manorial seats as Border Reivers and High Sheriffs. Defending northern marches for centuries, the family produced statesmen, judges, and military commanders. Codified early in feudal records, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls (Hamo le Rede).
The symbolism of the Reed coat of arms
Commanding and guardian-inspired, the Reed coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with a central golden griffin rampant. In classical heraldry, the deep blue field symbolises loyalty, truth, and unyielding faith, while the central golden griffin rampant (a mythic creature combining the eagle and lion) represents acute watchfulness, high intellect, fierce agility, and guardian protection of family domain. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of blue and gold feathers, symbolising noble elevation and light. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Northumberland and catalogued in Burke's Landed Gentry.
