The origin of the name Reay

Reay (Lord Reay / Clan Mackay of Reay) is an ancient Scottish clan name derived from the Lordship and parish of Reay in Caithness and Sutherland in the Far North of Scotland (derived from Gaelic réidh, meaning "flat land" or "smooth plain"). Serving as the hereditary territorial title for the Chiefs of Clan Mackay (Lords Reay), the House of Reay commanded vast Highland territories and coastal fortresses along the Pentland Firth, producing military generals, High Sheriffs, and European diplomats.

The symbolism of the Reay coat of arms

Sharing the exact forest-inspired armorial bearings of the noble Ray lineage, the Reay coat of arms features a vibrant green shield charged with three leaping argent / silver or white stags or harts (harts salient) with golden antlers (two in chief, one in base). In classical heraldry, the green field symbolises hope, vitality, and deep roots in Highland soil, while the three leaping silver stags represent swift alertness, forest lordship, harmony, and peace coupled with fierce defense when cornered. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a standing silver stag or hart with golden antlers, symbolising keen vigilance and forest command. Below, the motto scroll displays In omnia promptus, translating to "Ready for all things." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland for Lord Reay.
