The Ramsey Family Crest mug. Beautifully illustrated. Carefully researched. Uniquely personal.

Eminently suited for a proper brew! Whether it’s a gift to mark a milestone birthday, a new home, or Christmas morning — here’s an artwork with history in your hands.

The origin of the name Ramsey

Ramsey is the primary historical spelling variant of the noble Scottish clan surname Ramsay (Clan Ramsay of Dalhousie Castle). Holding ancestral lands across Midlothian, Angus, and Banffshire, families bearing the Ramsey spelling served as High Sheriffs, military commanders, and international scientists across Britain and North America.

The symbolism of the Ramsey coat of arms

Sharing the exact ancestral bearings of the noble Clan Ramsay lineage, the Ramsey coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a central black eagle displayed with spread wings, golden beak, and claws. In classical heraldry, the silver field symbolises sincerity, peace, and unblemished judicial purity, while the central black eagle displayed represents high intellect, solar courage, imperial vision, and noble elevation. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a silver unicorn's head erased, symbolising chivalric purity, untamed spirit, and invincible strength. Below, the motto scroll displays Ora et labora, translating to "Pray and work." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in Scottish heraldic registries and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.

Historical figures

Sir William Ramsey (14th Century): Scottish knight and signatory of early royal charters.
Lady Eleanor Ramsey (17th Century): Recorded gentlewoman and benefactor in Scottish land rolls.
Sir William Ramsay / Ramsey (1852–1916): Famed Scottish chemist who discovered the noble gases and won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
