The origin of the name Ramsay
Ramsay (Clan Ramsay) is one of the most famous noble Gaelic and Anglo-Norman clan surnames in Scottish history, derived from the place name Ramsay near Huntingdon (Old English hramsa-eg, meaning "wild garlic island"). Introduced to Scotland in the 12th century by Sir Simund de Ramsay, who was granted lands at Dalhousie in Midlothian by King David I, the clan rose to immense power as Earls of Dalhousie and Barons Ramsay. Defending Scottish independence alongside King Robert the Bruce, the Chiefs of Clan Ramsay were recorded as Signatories of the 1320 Declaration of Arbroath.
The symbolism of the Ramsay coat of arms
Visually pure and imperial, the Ramsay coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a central black eagle displayed with spread wings, golden beak, and claws. In classical heraldry, the silver field symbolises sincerity, peace, and unblemished judicial purity, while the central black eagle displayed represents high intellect, solar courage, imperial vision, and noble elevation. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a silver unicorn's head erased, serving as an iconic emblem of chivalric purity, untamed spirit, and invincible strength. Below, the motto scroll displays Ora et labora, translating to "Pray and work." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland for the Earls of Dalhousie.
