The origin of the name Ramos

Ramos (de Ramos) is an ancient Spanish and Galician surname derived from Spanish ramo (meaning "branch," "bough," or "foliage," originally given to a child born on Palm Sunday—Domingo de Ramos—or referring to an ancestor residing near manorial olive groves). Originating in Castile, Galicia, and Andalusia, the House of Ramos established influential seats, producing Knights of Calatrava, royal officers, and civic magistrates across Spain, the Canary Islands, and New Spain.

The symbolism of the Ramos coat of arms

Visually complex and fortress-inspired, the Ramos coat of arms features a red shield charged with two golden triple-towered castles or towers arranged vertically in pale, set between a central golden portcullis chained, flanked at the bottom by two green olive or laurel branches. In Iberian heraldry, the red field symbolises martial courage, fortitude, and sacrifice, while the two golden castles represent fortress defense, architectural strength, and manorial hospitality across ancestral domains. The golden chained portcullis denotes invincibility, guardianship of the gates, and trust, while the two green branches signify peace, glory, and noble victory. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a plume of red and gold feathers, symbolising noble elevation. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in Spanish nobility rolls and catalogued in the Nobiliario Español and J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.
