The origin of the name Ramirez

Ramirez (Ramírez) is an ancient Spanish and Galician patronymic noble surname meaning "son of Ramiro" (derived from Germanic Raimir, composed of ragin, meaning "counsel/advisor," and meri, meaning "famous" or "brilliant"—thus "famous advisor"). Originating during the early Middle Ages in the northern kingdoms of Asturias, Galicia, and Castile, the House of Ramírez rose to high grandee status as Marquis of Westwood and Counts of Murillo. Members served as Knights of Santiago, viceroys, royal governors, and commanders across Spain and the Americas.

The symbolism of the Ramirez coat of arms

Visually striking and protective, the Ramirez coat of arms features a radiant golden shield charged with a leafy green oak tree rooted upon a green grassy mount in base, against which a golden lion rampant rears in battle stance. The inner shield is set within a broad red border (bordure) charged with eight golden saltires (X-shaped crosses). In Iberian heraldry, the gold field symbolises generosity, elevation of mind, and royal favor, while the green oak tree on a mount represents ancient land tenure, family roots, and enduring vitality. The golden lion rearing against the trunk signifies supreme courage, warrior fortitude, and defense of ancestral land. The red bordure with eight golden saltires denotes martial sacrifice and victory at the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa (1212). Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a plume of red and gold feathers, symbolising noble elevation. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in Castilian nobility rolls and catalogued in the Nobiliario Español and J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.
