The origin of the name Quinn
This coat of arms belongs to the distinguished Limerick lineage of Quinn (and Quin), historically centered around Adare in County Limerick. Deriving from the Gaelic Ó Cuinn, this branch produced the celebrated Barons of Adare and Earls of Dunraven. Rising to prominence through civic leadership, diplomacy, and landholding, the Limerick Quinns transformed Adare Manor into one of Ireland's most magnificent estates.
The symbolism of the Quinn coat of arms
The Limerick coat of arms features a vert (green) shield topped by an arched or (gold) chief, charged with a silver Pegasus (winged horse) rampant. In classical heraldry, vert symbolizes hope, vitality, and connection to the Irish landscape, while gold represents noble intellect and generosity.
The silver Pegasus embodies poetic inspiration, swiftness, high ambition, and noble elevation above earthly obstacles.
Positioned above the shield on a green and gold torse, the crest displays a wolf's head erased, symbolizing steadfast loyalty and unyielding guardianship of family lands. Anchoring the shield, the golden scroll bears the Latin motto Quod sursum volo videre ("I wish to see what is above"). Officially registered in the Court of the Lord Lyon and Ulster's Office of Arms.
