The origin of the name Quin

Quin (and its ancient spelling Quin) is a venerable Irish surname derived from the Gaelic Ó Cuinn, meaning "descendant of Conn" (a personal name signifying wisdom, counsel, or chief). The primary ancestral seat of the lineage was the powerful sept of Muintir-Ifearnáin, established at Inchiquin in County Clare (Thomond). Renowned as chieftains and patrons of Gaelic culture, branches of the family also established historic territories in County Longford and County Tyrone.

The symbolism of the Quin coat of arms

The Muintir-Ifearnáin coat of arms displays a gules (red) shield charged with an erect arm holding a silver sword, flanked in chief by two argent (silver) crescents and in base by two entwined golden serpents. In classical heraldry, gules signifies warrior fortitude and royal sacrifice, while argent represents peace and sincerity.

The central sword erect symbolizes unyielding justice and defense of clan sovereignty, while the crescents denote enlightened honor and hope. The entwined serpents embody ancient Gaelic wisdom, rebirth, healing, and eternal vigilance.

Surmounting the shield, the crest features a fierce tusked boar's head erased, representing indefatigable bravery and generous hospitality. The golden motto ribbon displays the Latin Quod sursum volo videre ("I wish to see what is above"). Officially recorded in the Office of Ulster King of Arms and Burke’s General Armory.

Niall Ó Cuinn (11th century): Early chieftain of Muintir-Ifearnáin who led clan forces alongside King Brian Boru at the Battle of Clontarf in 1014.

Walter Quin (c. 1575–1634): Dublin-born poet, scholar, and tutor to King Charles I at the English Royal Court.

Edel Quinn (1907–1944): Celebrated Irish missionary envoy who established hundreds of Legion of Mary branches across East Africa.
