The origin of the name Powers

Powers is the primary historical patronymic spelling variant of the ancient Anglo-Norman noble surname Power (le Poer). Established across County Waterford, Tipperary, and North America, families bearing the Powers spelling held respected landed estates and produced high-ranking statesmen, sculptors, and legal scholars.

The symbolism of the Powers coat of arms

Visually pure and forest-inspired, the Powers coat of arms features a shield partitioned horizontally per fess in green and argent / silver or white, charged with a central walking stag (hart trippant) counterchanged (silver on the upper green half, green on the lower silver half), set between three trefoils or shamrocks counterchanged (two silver in chief, one green in base). In heraldry, the green and silver fields symbolise hope, vitality, sincerity, peace, and deep roots in Irish soil. The walking stag represents swift alertness, forest lordship, and harmony, while the three trefoils signify perpetual faith, hope, and native identity. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a brown stag's head erased with branching antlers, symbolising keen vigilance and forest command. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in heraldic registries and catalogued in Burke's General Armory.
