The origin of the name Powell

Powell is an ancient Welsh patronymic surname derived from Ap Hywel (meaning "son of Howell," from hywel, meaning "eminent," "conspicuous," or "exalted warrior"). Tracing descent from ancient Welsh princes of Radnorshire and Carmarthenshire, the House of Powell established major landed estates across Breconshire, Monmouthshire, and Surrey. Members of the family served as High Sheriffs, judges, and military commanders. Codified early in feudal administrative records, the name appears in 16th-century Welsh heraldic rolls.

The symbolism of the Powell coat of arms

Commanding and heraldically balanced, the Powell coat of arms features a shield partitioned horizontally per fess in black and argent / silver or white, charged overall with a central lion rampant counterchanged (silver on the upper black half, black on the lower silver half). In classical Welsh heraldry, the black and silver fields symbolise deep wisdom, dignity, sincerity, peace, and unblemished judicial purity. The lion rampant counterchanged represents supreme bravery, warrior fortitude, and perfect balance between light and strength. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a green dragon standing with wings displayed, symbolising formidable guardianship, ancient Welsh dragon heritage, and acute watchfulness. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in Lewys Dwnn’s Heraldic Visitations of Wales and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.
