The origin of the name Polk

Polk is an ancient Scottish clan surname derived as a phonetic contraction of Pollok (originating from the Barony of Pollok in Renfrewshire, derived from Gaelic poll, meaning "pool" or "creek"). Migrating from Scotland to Ulster in the 17th century before settling prominently in Maryland and North Carolina, the House of Polk produced United States Presidents, First Ladies, generals, and foundational American statesmen.

The symbolism of the Polk coat of arms

Commanding and forest-inspired, the Polk coat of arms features a vibrant green shield charged with a broad golden saltire (X-shaped cross), set between three silver hunting horns or bugles stringed red (two in flanks, one in base). In classical heraldry, the green field symbolises hope, vitality, and deep roots in ancestral soil, while the golden saltire represents cross-road resolution, chivalry, and unyielding defense of domain. The three silver hunting horns signify forest lordship, heraldic messaging, high alert, and a swift rally in times of warfare. Positioned above the shield, a steel knight's helmet in profile with visor closed rests atop the field, symbolising chivalric honor and martial defense. The crest above displays a golden wild boar statant pierced through the shoulder with a green-fletched arrow, symbolising untamed martial fortitude and enduring injury with bravery. Below, the motto scroll displays Audaciter et strenue, translating to "Boldly and strenuously." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in Scottish armorial rolls and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.
