Eminently suited for a proper brew! Whether it’s a gift to mark a milestone birthday, a new home, or Christmas morning — here’s an artwork with history in your hands.

The origin of the name Philips

Philips (Phillips / Phillipps) is an ancient Anglo-Norman, English, and Welsh patronymic surname derived from the Greek personal name Philippos (composed of philein, meaning "to love," and hippos, meaning "horse"—thus "lover of horses"). Establishing premier landed seats across Pembrokeshire (Picton Castle), Warwickshire, and Worcestershire, the House of Philips rose to prominent aristocracy as Barons Milford and baronets, serving as High Sheriffs, Parliamentarians, and literary figures. Codified early in feudal administrative rolls, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls (John Philips).

The symbolism of the Philips coat of arms

Commanding and regal, the Philips coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a central black lion rampant wearing a golden collar and chain (gorged with a ducal coronet and chained or). In classical heraldry, the silver field symbolises sincerity, peace, and unblemished judicial purity, while the central black lion rampant represents supreme bravery, royal Welsh lineage, deep wisdom, and noble dignity. The golden collar and chain signify high civic duty, noble bonds of service, and holding great power in honorable restraint. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of black and silver feathers, symbolising noble elevation and light. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Pembrokeshire and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.

Historical figures

Sir John Philips of Picton Castle (d. 1629): 1st Baronet, High Sheriff of Pembrokeshire, and landed gentleman.

Katherine Philips (1632–1664): Celebrated Anglo-Welsh poet known as "The Matchless Orinda."

Sir Richard Philips, 1st Baron Milford (1744–1823): British politician and Lord Lieutenant of Haverfordwest.
