The origin of the name Peterson
Peterson is an ancient English, Scottish, and Scandinavian patronymic surname meaning "son of Peter." Establishing early seats in the Shetland Islands, Aberdeenshire, Yorkshire, and across Sweden, the House of Peterson held respected standing as hereditary landholders, magistrates, and naval commanders across the North Sea. Codified early in feudal records, the name appears in the 1379 Poll Tax of Yorkshire (Adam Peterson).
The symbolism of the Peterson coat of arms
Visually complex and sacred, the Peterson coat of arms features a black shield charged with a broad argent / silver or white cross, set between four walking silver lions rampant in the quarters. The arms of the silver cross are charged with five black eagles displayed with spread wings. In classical heraldry, the black field symbolises deep wisdom, dignity, and constancy, while the silver cross represents unyielding Christian devotion, peace, and judicial purity. The four silver lions denote supreme bravery and noble defense, while the five black eagles signify imperial vision, high intellect, and acute watchfulness across generations. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a bare arm issuing erect holding a silver scimitar or curved steel sword, symbolising armed readiness and decisive justice. Below, the motto scroll displays Nihil sine Deo, translating to "Nothing without God." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in British and Scottish armorial rolls and catalogued in Burke's General Armory.
