The origin of the name Peters
Peters is an ancient English, Dutch, and German patronymic surname meaning "son of Peter" (derived from Greek Petros, meaning "rock" or "firm foundation"). Widespread across Devon, Cornwall, Kent, and the Low Countries following the early Middle Ages, families bearing the Peters name held respected standing as manorial landholders, High Sheriffs, and merchants. Codified early in medieval administrative records, the name appears in early feudal charters across Western Europe.
The symbolism of the Peters coat of arms
Visually striking and symbolic, the Peters coat of arms features a shield partitioned arched horizontally: the upper black field is charged with three golden lozenges or mascles, set above a lower golden section bearing a central black lion rampant. In classical heraldry, the black upper field symbolises deep wisdom, dignity, and constancy under trial, while the gold lower field denotes generosity and royal favor. The three golden lozenges represent architectural grace, nobility, and structural unity, while the black lion rampant signifies supreme courage and heroic leadership. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays an argent / silver or white swan standing upon a golden lozenge with wings elevated, symbolising rare grace, sincerity, and martial vigilance. Below, the motto scroll displays Invidia major, translating to "Above envy." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Devon and catalogued in Burke's Landed Gentry.
