The origin of the name Perry

Perry (Pery / de la Perer) is an ancient Anglo-Norman and English topographic and status surname derived from Middle English perrie or Old French poirier (referring to an ancestor who lived near a prominent pear tree or orchard, or served as a manorial orchard keeper). Establishing early seats across Worcestershire, Somerset, Devon, and Ireland (where the family was elevated as Earls of Limerick), the House of Perry produced naval commanders, High Sheriffs, and pioneering engineers. Codified early in feudal records, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Cambridgeshire (Richard de la Perer).

The symbolism of the Perry coat of arms

Visually bold and chivalric, the Perry coat of arms features a shield partitioned quarterly in red and gold, charged overall with a broad argent / silver or white diagonal band (bend) bearing three walking black lions rampant. In classical heraldry, the red and gold quarters symbolise martial courage, fortitude, generosity, and royal favor. The silver diagonal bend represents a knightly sash of honor and unblemished judicial purity, while the three black lions rampant signify supreme bravery, deep wisdom, dignity, and watchful protection of domain. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of red and gold feathers, symbolising noble elevation and light. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Worcestershire and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.
