The origin of the name Perkins
Perkins (Parkins / Perkinson) is an ancient English patronymic surname meaning "son of Perkin" (a medieval diminutive of Peter, meaning "rock"). Establishing premier landed seats across Warwickshire, Leicestershire, Berkshire (Ufton Court), and Northamptonshire, the House of Perkins produced High Sheriffs, parliamentary officers, and scholars. Codified early in feudal records, the name appears in the 1327 Subsidy Rolls of Warwickshire (John Perkyns).
The symbolism of the Perkins coat of arms
Commanding and noble, the Perkins coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a central walking black lion (lion passant), set between three red fleurs-de-lis (two in chief, one in base). In classical heraldry, the silver shield symbolises sincerity, peace, and unblemished judicial purity, while the central black lion passant represents supreme bravery, deep wisdom, dignity, and watchful defense of domain. The three red fleurs-de-lis signify royal favor, martial sacrifice, and spiritual purity across generations. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a walking black lion holding a red fleur-de-lis in its right paw, reinforcing courageous leadership holding noble faith. Below, the motto scroll displays Simplex vigilum veri, translating to "Simple guardian of truth." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Berkshire and catalogued in Burke's Landed Gentry.
