The origin of the name Perez

Perez (Pérez) is an ancient Spanish and Galician patronymic noble surname meaning "son of Pedro" (derived from Latin Petros, meaning "rock" or "steadfast foundation"). Originating during the 8th century in Castile, Galicia, and Asturias, the House of Pérez rose to supreme aristocracy as Counts of La Viñaza, Secretaries of State, and Grand Commanders of the Order of Calatrava. Dominating Golden Age Spain, members served as viceroys, royal navigators, and conquistadors across Europe and the Americas.

The symbolism of the Perez coat of arms

Visually sacred and chivalric, the Perez coat of arms features a red shield charged with a broad central golden cross flory/patonce edged in silver, set between four golden fleurs-de-lis in the corners. In Iberian heraldry, the red field symbolises martial courage and sacrifice, while the central golden cross with silver edging represents unyielding Christian faith, noble expansion, and unblemished judicial purity. The four golden fleurs-de-lis denote royal Castilian favor, spiritual purity, and chivalric virtue across generations. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of red and gold feathers, symbolising noble elevation and light. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in Castilian grandee rolls and catalogued in the Nobiliario Español and J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.
