The origin of the name Pena
Pena (Peña / de la Peña) is an ancient Spanish grandee noble surname derived from Spanish peña (meaning "rock," "cliff," or "fortified crag"). Originating during the early Reconquista in the northern mountain realms of Galicia, Asturias, and Old Castile, the House of Peña established prominent manorial seats as Lords of Peña and Knights of Santiago. Defending mountain strongholds and expanding across Spain and New Spain, members of the family served as royal governors, military commanders, and bishops.
The symbolism of the Pena coat of arms
Visually bold and celestial, the Pena coat of arms features a red shield charged with three golden six-pointed stars (mullets: two in chief, one in base). In Iberian heraldry, the red field symbolises martial courage, fortitude, and sacrifice on the field of battle. The three golden six-pointed stars denote divine illumination, celestial guidance, high intellect, and noble family alignment across generations. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of red and gold feathers, symbolising noble elevation, light, and victory. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in Galician and Castilian nobility rolls and registered in the Nobiliario Español and J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.
