The origin of the name Pearson
Pearson (Pierson) is an ancient English and Scottish patronymic surname meaning "son of Piers" or "son of Peter." Establishing influential landed seats across Yorkshire, Durham, Cumberland, and the Scottish Borders, the House of Pearson rose to prominent aristocratic standing as Viscounts Cowdray. Members served as High Sheriffs, parliamentary theorists, global industrial pioneers, and scholars. Codified early in medieval administrative records, the name appears in the 1379 Poll Tax of Yorkshire (Walter Pierson).
The symbolism of the Pearson coat of arms
Visually vibrant and celestial, the Pearson coat of arms features a shield partitioned horizontally embattled per fess in red and deep blue, charged with three golden suns in splendour (two in chief, one in base). In classical heraldry, the red and blue fields symbolise martial courage, sacrifice, loyalty, truth, and faith, while the embattled line of partition represents fortress battlements and structural defense. The three golden suns in splendour denote divine glory, truth radiating in all directions, solar elevation, and warm generosity across generations. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of red and gold feathers, symbolising noble elevation and light. Below, the motto scroll displays Dum spiro spero, translating to "While I breathe, I hope." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Yorkshire and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.
