The origin of the name Pearse

Pearse (Pierce / Pearce) is an ancient Anglo-Norman and Gaelic patronymic surname meaning "son of Piers" or "son of Peter" (derived from Greek Petros, meaning "rock" or "firm foundation"). Widespread across Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, and Ireland (County Dublin and Galway), the family held respected manorial seats and church baronies. The lineage achieved immortal fame in Irish history through Patrick Pearse, leader of the 1916 Easter Rising. Codified early, the name appears in feudal records as Piers.

The symbolism of the Pearse coat of arms

Visually pure and martial, the Pearse coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a broad black chevron, set between three black wild boar's heads erased (two in chief, one in base). In classical heraldry, the silver shield symbolises sincerity, peace, and unblemished judicial purity, while the broad black chevron represents fortress defense, architectural integrity, and constancy under trial. The three black wild boar heads signify untamed martial courage, fierce determination, acute vigilance, and formidable defense of domain. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a silver pelican in her piety vulning herself (pecking her breast to feed her young with drops of red blood), serving as an iconic emblem of self-sacrificing maternal love, devotion, charity, and unyielding protection of family. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in British and Irish armorial rolls and catalogued in Burke's Landed Gentry.
