The origin of the name Payne
Payne (Paine / Payn) is an ancient Anglo-Norman status surname derived from Old French Paien (from Latin Paganus, originally meaning "villager," "countryman," or "rustic"). Introduced to England during the 1066 Norman Conquest, families bearing the Payne name established major landed estates across Sussex, Norfolk, Leicestershire, and the Channel Islands (Jersey). Elevated as Earls of Jersey and baronets, members served as High Sheriffs, naval officers, and colonial leaders. Codified early in feudal records, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls (John Payn).
The symbolism of the Payne coat of arms
Commanding and chivalric, the Payne coat of arms features a red shield charged with a broad central argent / silver or white horizontal band (fess), set between two walking silver lions in pale (lions passant: one in chief, one in base). In classical heraldry, the red field symbolises martial courage, fortitude, and sacrifice, while the silver fess represents a knightly sash of honor, structural stability, and unblemished purity. The two walking silver lions denote supreme bravery, heroic watchfulness, royal favor, and vigilant defense of family territory. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays an arm in steel armor holding a broken golden lance or spear erect, symbolising chivalric valor, perseverance, and victory despite broken weapons or hardship. Below, the motto scroll displays Malo mori quam foedari, translating to "I would rather die than be dishonored." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Norfolk and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.
