The origin of the name Paul
Paul is an ancient Latin personal name and surname derived from Paulus (meaning "small," "humble," or "few"). Introduced across Western Europe following the spread of early Christian history and the Norman Conquest of 1066, the House of Paul established prominent manorial seats across Gloucestershire (Rodborough Manor), Fife in Scotland, and County Wexford in Ireland. Members served as High Sheriffs, baronets, and civic magistrates. Codified early in feudal records, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Lincolnshire (Stephen Paul).
The symbolism of the Paul coat of arms
Visually balanced and sacred, the Paul coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a broad central deep blue horizontal band (fess) bearing three golden crosses crosslet, set above three black ermine spots in base. In classical heraldry, the silver field symbolises sincerity, peace, and unblemished judicial purity, while the deep blue fess denotes loyalty, truth, and faith. The three golden crosses crosslet represent unyielding Christian devotion, sacred pledges, and illuminated spirit, while the three black ermine spots signify high nobility, dignity, and steadfast integrity across generations. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a golden leopard's or panther's head caboshed (facing forward) with open jaws, symbolising acute watchfulness, fierce agility, and unyielding defense of family domain. Below, the motto scroll displays Pro Rege et Republica, translating to "For King and Republic." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Gloucestershire and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.
