The origin of the name Patterson
Patterson (Paterson) is an ancient Scottish and Ulster-Scots patronymic surname meaning "son of Patrick" (derived from Latin Patricius, meaning "noble"). Associated as a sept with Clan MacLaren and Clan Farquharson, the family held influential seats in Dumfriesshire and across Ulster (Counties Antrim and Down). Members of the House of Patterson served as founders of national banks, Governors of New Jersey, and international merchants.
The symbolism of the Patterson coat of arms
Visually striking and symbolic, the Patterson coat of arms features a red shield charged with three argent / silver or white pelicans vulning themselves (pecking their breasts to feed their young with blood), set beneath an argent / silver or white embattled top section (chief embattled) bearing three red five-pointed stars (mullets). In classical heraldry, the red field symbolises courage and sacrifice, while the three silver pelicans represent self-sacrificing maternal love, devotion, charity, and unblemished honor. The silver embattled chief signifies fortress battlements and architectural defense, while the three red stars denote divine guidance and high nobility. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of red and silver feathers, symbolising noble elevation. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland and catalogued in Burke's Landed Gentry.
