The origin of the name Park

Park (Parke / du Park) is an ancient English and Scottish topographic and status surname derived from Middle English park (referring to an ancestor who owned, resided near, or served as keeper of a manorial park or game forest). Originating in Renfrewshire (Scotland) and Yorkshire (England), the family held respected standing as hereditary forest rangers, landholders, and magistrates. Codified early in medieval records, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Lincolnshire (Robert de la Parke).

The symbolism of the Park coat of arms

Commanding and forest-inspired, the Park coat of arms features a radiant golden shield charged with a blue and argent / silver or white checkered horizontal band (fess chequy), set between three red stag's (hart's) heads erased (two in chief, one in base). In classical heraldry, the gold field symbolises generosity, elevation of mind, and royal favor, while the checkered fess represents strategic wisdom, balance, and structural stability. The three red stag heads denote forest lordship, swift alertness, harmony, and fierce protection of family territory. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a plume of blue and gold feathers, symbolising noble elevation. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland for Park of Lochrig and catalogued in Burke's Landed Gentry.

Historical figures

Lady Margaret Park (18th Century): Recorded gentlewoman and benefactor in Renfrewshire estate rolls.
Mungo Park (1771–1806): World-famous Scottish explorer who led historic expeditions mapping the Niger River.
