The origin of the name Palmer

Palmer is an ancient Anglo-Norman and English status surname derived from Middle English palmer (a pilgrim who had visited the Holy Land and carried a palm branch as a holy token). Widespread across England and Ireland following the 1066 Norman Conquest, families bearing the Palmer name established influential landed estates in Sussex, Kent, Norfolk, and County Mayo. Elevated to the peerage as Earls of Selborne and Barons Penrhyn, members served as Lord Chancellors, High Sheriffs, and military officers. Codified early in feudal administrative rolls, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls (John le Palmer).

The symbolism of the Palmer coat of arms

Visually balanced and watchful, the Palmer coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with two broad black horizontal bands (fesses) bearing six silver trefoils (three on each band), surmounted in chief by a dark grey hound running (greyhound courant). In classical heraldry, the silver field symbolises sincerity and peace, while the two black horizontal bands represent structural fortitude and constancy under trial. The six silver trefoils denote perpetual faith, hope, and spiritual vitality, while the running greyhound in chief signifies swift alertness, loyal watchfulness, and relentless defense of domain. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of black and gold feathers, symbolising noble elevation. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Sussex and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.
